About the Department

The department of Mathematics and Statistics was established in the year 2015. The department strives to be recognized for excellence among academic institutions in India and abroad. It offers M. Sc. and Ph. D. programs in the area of Mathematics and Statistics. Department focuses on providing a comprehensive curriculum at postgraduate and research level. It provides relevant research and career opportunities in India and abroad. In addition to the faculty’s strong research interests, there is an equally strong desire to provide instruction of the highest quality.

Mathematics plays a critical role in our efforts to understand the nature of the physical universe and in the continuing development of our technological society. There is also a long tradition that recognizes the value of mathematics for its aesthetic appeal to the human spirit. Many students of the liberal arts decide to study mathematics for one or both of these reasons. Students also study mathematics in order to develop critical reasoning skills that can significantly contribute to many personal goals. Within the last few years the frenetic pace of research and development in

computers and high technology has led to strong new imperatives for more mathematical expertise, and the need to nurture a new generation of mathematically competent men and women.

Vision:

To attain global level of excellence in mathematical sciences and to create a sustainable society through innovative research.

Mission:

  • To be among the country's best mathematics & statistics departments and to emerge as a centre of excellence in academics and innovative research.
  • To develop mathematical thinking and groom our students to become professionally sound citizens.
  • To have a lasting impact on mathematical sciences with special stress on its applications to the diverse areas of science, engineering and humanities.
  • To promote quality collaborative work with other stakeholders of mathematical sciences.

RAM PRAKASH BAMBAH AWARD

[HISTORIC TOUCH TO THE AWARD: Instituting an award in the honor of a living person by a living individual affirms a special bond between two of them. Moreover, this recognizes a long-term impact of one person on the life of the other. It is a way of showing gratitude publicly. That is how I have felt for several years about Professor R. P. Bambah (1925- ). During 1960-61, I was his student in MA Part II in the Mathematics Department of Panjab University, Chandigarh. He taught a course on the Theory of Numbers, an area of his specialization. It became my natural choice in my first (1963) of the three attempts for my PhD degree.

Dr. Bambah is absolutely unique in the world of Mathematics. He was a par excellent student of mathematics, a seminal researcher, and a successful administrator - a rare combination amongst mathematicians. For years, he served as the Head of the Mathematics Department and raised its profile to national fame, then Dean of University Instructions, and finally as the Vice Chancellor of Panjab University Chandigarh (1985-91). He was the president of the Indian Mathematical Society. For many years, he was one of the five trustees of the Tribune (Est. 1881). His list of honors include membership in the Indian National Science Academy, and the investiture of the Padma Bhushan, a civilian award of the Government of India. Therefore, the spirit of this award is to recognize sheer excellence in mathematics - without any consideration of age, caste, religion, economic status, gender, sexual orientation, regional affiliation, and national origin.]
